Will Jakarta’s new museum put it on the map of the world?

Indonesian contemporary art has been making a splash in the global art world, and works by artists such as Heri Dono and FX Harsono have been acclaimed at events like Art Basel Hong Kong and the Venice Biennale.

At home in Indonesia however, there are currently no museums devoted to international modern art – though this is set to change. In early 2017, Macan (the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Nusantar) will open its doors, displaying art from Indonesia and abroad. More than 800 works owned by Jakarta businessman Haryanto Adikoesoemo will serve as the foundation for the museum’s collection.

While Macan will display the works of prominent artists with international acclaim, Patricia Wulandari wants to help those who are just starting out. Her Catalyst Arts Market is a regular event that promotes the work of new and emerging illustrators and other types of visual artists.
