Standard Bank Joy of Jazz
PRETORIA - The Joy of Jazz festival celebrates its 16th year in 2014, and also moves from its usual home in Newton to a new venue, the Sandton Convention Centre. Two Grammy-winning artists will top the bill, American jazz vocalist Gregory Porter and trumpeter Roy Hargrove. There will also be a day of 'Jazz Divas'. The event, known officially as the Standard Bank Joy of Jazz, has grown hugely since its first small-scale event at the State Theatre in Pretoria in 1997. In 2013 a crowd of more than 24,000 attended.

Mar del Plata International Film Festival
Taking place each year at Mar del Plata on the Atlantic coast of Argentina, this festival was founded in 1954, and in its early years attracted guests like Errol Flynn and Gina Lollobrigida. It was cancelled in 1970 but then re-emerged in 1996, and since then has become a fixture on the film festival calendar. Latin American film is celebrated with a special award, and last year The Golden Cage directed by Diego Quemada-Diez won the award for best feature film.

BRAZIL : The Brazilian Symphony
The Brazilian Symphony Orchestra plays music by Brahms, Bach and Mozart with Sir James Galway conducting as flute soloist. The new home of the orchestra, the Cidade des Artes (City of Arts) is a cultural centre located in Barra da Tijuca in the south west of Rio, and is the largest modern concert hall in Latin America. Designed by French architect Christian de Portzamparc the venue has seating for 1,780. (Francisco Martins).
