Telluride; Abu Dhabi Film Festival and others

Telluride, Colorado is a mountain town nestled in the scenic San Juan peaks, and every year since 1973 it has hosted a celebration of movies and creativity, with many influential figures from the business landing there.

The organisers keep the programme under wraps in advance, and frequently its premieres become globally acclaimed films – past examples include gems like Slumdog Millionaire, Juno and The King’s Speech. There are a variety of festival-pass options, as well as ways to experience the event on a budget, while still feeling fully involved – for example there are free films shown at the Backlot Theater

Created in 2007, this festival is held every October in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates. Aiming to encourage filmmaking in Arab countries, it also shows movies from the rest of the world. Past festivals have attracted some glamorous figures – Uma Thurman, Adrien Brody, Joseph Fiennes and Eva Green, along with some of the Arab world’s best known stars, including well-known actress and UN goodwill ambassador, Muna Wassef.

Focussing on new Arab cinema, as well as emphasising Abu Dhabi’s role as a burgeoning cultural capital in the region, this festival is a vibrant arrival on the circuit.

Marrakech International Film Festival

The Marrakech Film Festival attracts stars and directors from all over the globe. In 2013, the jury was presided over by Martin Scorsese, with jury members including French actress Marion Cotillard. The event champions both global and north African talent – last year Algerian star Slimane Dazi and French child actor Didier Michon won jointly the best-male-actor award for their father-and-son roles in Hicham Ayouch’s Fevers. The festival includes various masterclasses as well as the Cinecoles competition in which student filmmakers present their short films. Le Palais des Congres is the centre of industrial activity, while the Colisée cinema hosts most of the public screenings. For the 2014 edition, Japanese cinema will be spotlighted.
