Giacomo Puccini’s popular opera is performed in November and December at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, with music direction by Ira Levin and stage direction by Hugo De Ana.
The libretto is based on the short story by John Luther Long, dramatised by David Belasco as a one-act play in 1900.
The original Teatro Colón opened in 1857 and was replaced in 1908 with a new building – the inaugural production was Verdi’s Aida. Between 2005 and 2010 the venue was extensively refurbished both inside and out, and is now considered among the best concert venues in the world.
