leana Sonnabend: Ambassador for the New

Gallerist and collector Ileana Sonnabend (1914 to 2007) helped to shape the direction of postwar art in both Europe and North America by championing significant artists as they emerged.
She was instrumental in introducing American pop art and Minimalism to Europe, and Italian Arte Povera to the United States. Sonnabend also supported some of the most challenging and groundbreaking conceptual art of the 1970s.
Among her collection, and recently donated to MoMA, is Robert Rauschenberg’s Combine Canyon. This show explores Sonnabend’s famously discerning eye through works she presented in her eponymous galleries in Paris and New York, among them pieces by Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns, Warhol, Robert Morris and Jeff Koons.
