In this long-running show, the Whitney showcases some of its best artwork from the first half of the 20th Century by 18 leading artists, displaying a survey of each artist’s work across a variety of media.
Architecture fans will find the museum itself of interest – an imposing granite presence at the corner of Madison Avenue, it was designed by Bauhaus-trained architect Marcel Breuer in 1966. Much criticised at the time, it is now acclaimed as innovative and daring. And work has started on the Whitney’s new building in downtown Manhattan. Designed by Renzo Piano, it is due to open in 2015.
